ANBU VEEDU- Respite Home for Persons with Disabilities

The Persons with disabilities being the vulnerable category in our society need constant support, care and protection. Amongst this target population, majority of the individuals are persons with special needs and are completely dependent on their care givers /family members for performing their day to day activities. The care givers experience high levels of stress, exhaustion and anxiety due to the relentless caring burden since they don’t get time off for attending their own emergencies, medical treatment, travel and participate in social gatherings.
The Department of Social Justice has rolled out a scheme called ‘ANBU VEEDU’, a respite home for temporarily accommodating the persons with disabilities especially for the individuals who suffer from autism, intellectual disabilities, neurodevelopment disorders and bedridden patients when the care givers need a break from their care giving duties.
Objectives
1)    Ensure relief for the care givers by giving them time off from their care giving duties by temporarily accommodating the individuals with special needs in a safe abode for not more than 7 days.
2)    Provide day care facility for the persons with disabilities who do not have the proper care support mechanisms at their residence.
3)    Offer temporary shelter to persons with special needs who are abandoned until they have a long term facility which ensures their care, protection and rehabilitation.
4)    It also acts as an entry home for the persons with disabilities with a maximum capacity to house 25 to 30 individuals in a single facility.
